Oulu is a fictional city on China’s southeastern coast. All places, institutions, and characters in this novel are fictional. Plaques and Laurels follows Oulu Medical College as it fights for the right to grant doctoral degrees, pushes for promotion to full university status, and watches its senior figures pursue one of Chinese academia’s most coveted distinctions: election as an Academician. At the center are Jia Qu, Xiaokun Li, and others maneuvering through research projects, institutional platforms, talent recruitment, affiliated hospitals, industry partnerships, and the intricate networks of academic influence. The institution seeks new “plaques”; individuals pursue their own “laurels,” and each lends strength to the other. In the process, research achievements are repackaged, resources redistributed, alliances formed and abandoned, and the boundaries between academic ambition, institutional development, personal interest, and public good become increasingly difficult to separate. Told in a restrained, satirical voice, the novel traces the rise of a provincial medical college while revealing the calculations, compromises, exchanges, and human choices hidden behind the grand language of academic progress.

A professor meets Minhua Zhang, a Chinese scholar living in the United States, through their shared Christian faith. Believing her sincere and trustworthy, he helps bring her to Dongjia Medical University, build a research team, establish laboratories and research programs, write grant proposals, and secure institutional support. Minhua Zhang, however, turns faith, identity, academic titles, and personal relationships into instruments of personal gain. Research grants, subsidized housing for high-level recruits, special project funds, even a provincial key laboratory—nothing escapes her calculation. After being used, betrayed, and humiliated again and again, the professor gradually comes to see her for who she is. Her actions force him to reconsider not only faith and academic ethics, but also a university system in which personal interest so often takes precedence over principle.

Set against the recruitment of overseas-trained scholars by a regional medical university, this book follows the experiences of Zhu Jianhong, Lü Bin, Ding Zaokun, and others to reveal that academic credentials, professional ability, and moral character do not necessarily go hand in hand. Some treat the kindness of others as something they are simply entitled to, turn public resources into private gain, and exploit supervisory authority, research funding, and institutional loopholes for personal benefit. They may not always break the law, yet they constantly operate at the edge of the rules, harming others while preserving an appearance of respectability. The book ultimately asks: What must a university truly defend—the boundaries of its regulations, or the moral limits of human conduct?

This book tells the story of Ethan Walker, who leaves Red Creek behind and ventures into the wider world. With courage and desire, he gains wealth, fame, and women in the city, only to be outmaneuvered in a larger business deal and ultimately lose his career, his health, and any place to call home. In his later years, he returns to the old family house and faces once again the ancient oak tree in the backyard, the very tree he once mocked.A tree never travels far in its lifetime, yet it witnesses people come and go, flowers bloom and fall. A person may travel the world, yet still fail to learn when to stop. Under the tree, Ethan finally comes to understand: movement has its openness, stillness has its endurance; stillness has its strengths, and movement has its limits.

The Chosen Secretary of War opens with the president’s casual remark, “He likes war,” a line that reawakens Daniel Mercer’s buried trauma. Years earlier, as a pilot, Daniel helped bomb his wife’s homeland, drawing her sister’s family into death, separation, and lifelong grief. Decades later, Evan Hawk rises as a new Secretary of War, turning fear, power, and applause into a call for renewed conflict. Across Washington, Belgrade, and Beijing, broken pens, bread, photographs, and testimony reveal the human cost of fire—and ask whom war truly serves after the speeches end.
